Battery Cell Pouch Sealing: Supporting OXIS Energy's Battery Innovation
How our heat sealing expertise supported OXIS Energy in developing a robust pouch sealing process for advanced battery cell production.
Building on our successful work together on previous projects, we partnered with OXIS Energy as part of the Faraday Battery Challenge. Our role was to support the development of a robust and reliable battery cell pouch sealing process for future production.
The project
We were delighted to work with OXIS Energy on the Faraday Battery Challenge. The programme aimed to support battery research and innovation within the UK automotive industry.
As part of the programme, Innovate UK provided funding for specific research and development projects within the programme. OXIS Energy led the Lithium Sulfur Future Automotive Li-SAF project, valued at approximately £7 million. In particular, the project focused on developing a next-generation battery cell. The aim was to improve power and cycle life for larger automotive applications.
Heat sealing technologies
Since the project began in 2018, our engineers have worked closely with OXIS Energy. As part of this work, we provided crucial test data on the performance of a selection of our heat sealing technologies.
These tests included checking the compatibility of materials used in battery cell production. In addition, we developed a specific test station to evaluate different heat sealing technologies and determine the most robust and suitable pouch sealing process.
